2003-bencompletecast A FLYRODDER AT SUNDOWN
Salmon runs in the Smith River can make for some of the most exciting fly-fishing in the world. Here a lone angler completes his cast as the sun begins to set on the estuary of this great river. Big Chinook Salmon enter the mouth just downstream from this spot. These migratory fish hold in the pools of lower river waiting for fall rains to raise the water levels enough for them to pass over shallow riffles leading to the spawning redds, upriver. Sundown is a magic time as fish begin to splash, giving away their hiding places. Small flies and light leaders can be very effective on these beautiful fish when the river is low and clear and a big one is a challenge to land on the light tackle.
