2002-jumpimgsteelieJohn A FLYRFISHERMAN PLAYS A "HALF-POUNDER" STEELHEAD
In late summer and early fall the small steelhead known as half-pounders (any fish up to two pounds or so) enter the Smith River. Wading the riffles can be effective when conditions are right. This photo was taken just a few minutes drive up the river from the Crescent City Vacation Rental House. These "grilse" are the earliest arrivals of the coming winter spawning run of the adult steelhead the Smith is famous for. The big run begins after Thanksgiving and continues until the season closes the end of March. The peak time can be January and February when rains keep the river higher, although one guest of the Battery Point Beach House landed a 25 pounder in March of 2004. Guides are available for all-day drift trips to fish with conventional tackle. Fly-fishing during high water requires special methods and tackle.
